Contemporary Gallery of Modern Art

The Contemporary Gallery of Modern Art challenges the traditional concept of a gallery space.

The Contemporary Gallery of Modern Art is a new platform for modern art in contemporary surroundings, that are adjustable to each exhibition. By being so, the gallery innovates how we think of exhibition spaces, in the way of adjustability, possibilities and size. Furthermore, the gallery has the unique possibility to travel – not only around the city, but at some point around the world. The Contemporary Gallery of Modern Art is founded by the two art students from Gerrit Rietveld Academie Bjørg Dyg Nielsen and Olivia Sahl Jensen, who says:

“The concept of the gallery emerged from a curiosity concerning the relation between the greatness of an idea and the greatness of its physical matter. The idea of re-thinking dimensions also allowed for an opportunity for us young artists to run our own gallery without the substantial expense of renting a space in Amsterdam, as well as the ability for the gallery to travel abroad.”

The gallery’s first exhibition ‘How to be a professional art institution’ by Bjørg Dyg Nielsen will open on the 1st of December and run until the 4th inside the Rietveld Academie. Afterwards, the gallery will tour around the city for a few days, where it can be found along with the gallerists in some of Amsterdam’s central squares.

The exhibition ‘How to be a professional art institution’ comments on the ongoing debate about the problems within the dutch art scene. This includes how members of staff within art institutions show discriminative and violent behaviour, how the institutions handle the victims hereof and deny knowledge of complaints prior to the current light-shedding.

The gallerists are excited to open the first exhibition and hope to present the next exhibit in the beginning of 2021.

“For our next shows we seek to collaborate with international up-coming artists. Due to the dimensions of the gallery space, we find collaborating internationally especially suitable and artworks can easily be exchanged. We highly encourage artists to get in contact with us already.”

The Contemporary Gallery of Modern Art debuts on the 1st of December with the opening exhibition ‘How to be a professional art-institution’ which will run from the 1st to the 4th of December inside the Rietveld Academie on Frederik Roeskestraat 96, 1076 ED Amsterdam, and can subsequently be found in public squares around the city.
